SPECIAL EVENTS at the PLAZA CINEMA

Sefton on Film

SEFTON ON FILM – Thursday 26th June at 7.30pm

The Plaza Community Cinema is pleased to welcome back for a second time North west Film Archive for a new screening of old archive films of Liverpool and Sefton.

The films date back to 1897 and include the iconic Lumiere Brothers film showing views of the City and River. This is the oldest piece of film in the Archive’s collection.

The event will be presented by Geoff Senior, the Archives Collections Assistant, and will take viewers on a unique heritage trail from 1897 through to 1979.

Highlights of the evening include a special Sefton focus featuring Formby lifeboat being towed across the beach by a horse drawn carriage in 1915, Mr. R A King taking a flight over Freshfields but experiencing a bumpy landing. Formby Gala and Sports Day from 1932 is also part of the line up.

There will be a couple of Gaumont newsreels dating back to January 1934. The first shows a tram accident and fatality, the second, a little more light hearted features scenes from Liverpool University’s annual “Panto Week.”

The real treat of the evening is “City On The Mersey” a hand-tinted colour film revealing views around St. George’s hall, a park and on the waterfront from 1929. This will be the second screening of this film in 75 years!

Other items for inclusion feature a visit by the Queen Mother, in 1954, to present the colours to the 1st Battalion of the Manchester Regiment at Harrington Barracks, Formby.
There will also be a chance to see a promotional film showcasing Liverpool’s emergence as an industrial power in the 1960’s. This film spotlights the Ford Car plant, Bearbrand Stockings, Roses, Schweppes and a number of Pharmaceutical Companies.

This is in direct contrast with “What’s So Funny About Liverpool?” From 1979 the film examines the decline of the once great City.

Tickets are available from the Plaza cinema Box Office, price £4. For further information please contact Christine Physick on 0151 928 1530.
